Champions League Other Leagues — 19 September 2007

Real Madrid got off to a winning start with a new coach in the Champions League thanks to goals from Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Raul.

Raul’s goal took his tally in the Champions League to 59 just a goal behind Inzaghi & Shevchenko with both of his rivals also scoring on the same night.

Raul’s goal arrived on 16 minutes. Van Nistelrooy headed for the left by-line and Raul’s trajectory took him towards the near post. He checked back before darting again just as the Netherlands striker clipped a cross towards him and the header inside the near post was clinical. It was the striker’s 57th goal in the competition, a record but the German team bounced back with Dusko Tosic crossed from the left and Sanogo stretched to get to the ball ahead of Iker Casillas and poke home.

Raul turned provider for Ruud and played him in the 74th minute, stroking a lovely finish early inside the near post to put his side ahead.
