Capello: Lampard still a key man

England manager Fabio Capello has revealed that Frank Lampard is still very much part of his plans.

The Chelsea midfielder was dropped for Friday night’s qualifier against Bulgaria and this has led to some concluding that Lampard’s international career is coming to an end.

Capello has moved to deny these reports though, revealing that the 33-year-old is a crucial part of the squad and that he could start against Wales tomorrow evening.

The England boss said: “Frank Lampard is a really important player, like others that are here and some players that are not here, like Jack Wilshere, Steven Gerrard and other ones.”

“I think he’s ready to play with us. He is one of the important players and one of the leaders of this squad.”

“Probably we can change the style to a different style to the one we played against Bulgaria because tomorrow we are playing at home.”

Lampard could perhaps come in for either Gareth Barry or Scott Parker should England decide to adopt a more attacking formation to the one on Friday night.

If he does come in, he will not let England down either. He has perhaps had too much criticism in the past for his England performances, because he has scored plenty of important goals for his country.

You just know that he will give his all too. He has already said that he will never retire from England duty and as long as Capello picks him, he will be available to perform for his country.

Three Lions skipper John Terry has backed his Chelsea team-mate to return to the side too, saying: “Write Frank Lampard off at your peril. I have known him an awful long time and he was disappointed about not starting but trained incredibly hard the day after and he remains one of the best players I have ever played with.”

“Because of his age people tend to write him off but he is still in excellent form. His record for England has been incredible.”

Elsewhere, Capello has spoken about his concerns for England striker Andy Carroll’s lifestyle. The £35m striker has often been criticised about his behaviour away from football and the Italian believes he needs to ‘be careful’.

Capello said: “He needs to be careful because he’s an important player for England and Liverpool.”

“He understands what he needs to do. I never said Carroll drinks too much. I think if you want to be a good player then you need to drink less than normal. I have spoken to him privately.”

England take on Wales at Wembley tomorrow evening, with victory taking them a step close to qualifying for Euro 2012.
