Following victory in the Champions League last night, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has called on his team to raise their game once again when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend.
The Blues secured a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge last night, with David Luiz and Juan Mata scoring the goals to ensure life under Villas-Boas in Europe began well.
Both John Terry and Frank Lampard were rested for the match, but will come straight back into the mix when Chelsea travel to Manchester on Sunday. This is now the focus for the former Porto boss.
Speaking after the 2-0 win, he said: “We will go there to try to win it. It’s going to be a very good early-season game.”
“We face United perhaps in their most tremendous moment of motivation and flair and style.”
“A team that has made its impact at the beginning of the Premier League is different from last year, but I think it provokes in us a good challenge.”
“Motivation will be the key factor in the game, and the capacity of people to transcend themselves and take the game through and come back from Old Trafford with a win.”
Both Chelsea and United have started the Premier League season with positively of course, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have been as sublime as Chelsea have been efficient.
Following a hard fought victory over West Brom on the opening day, United have gone on to hammer Spurs 3-0, humiliate Arsenal 8-2 and wipe the floor with Bolton for a 5-0 away victory most recently.
Chelsea meanwhile have secured wins over West Brom, Norwich and Sunderland, although they were held to a 0-0 draw at Stoke on the opening day of the season.
United will undoubtedly be favourites to pick up the three points, but with Villas-Boas in confident mood, he will be hoping to inspire his team to an extremely valuable victory.
In terms of the title race, it is very early stages, but if Chelsea lose this weekend, they will be five points behind United and this is a significant gap after only five games.
Having Lampard and Terry fresh will help Chelsea, while Fernando Torres – who had been under investigation for comments made about his team-mates – appears to be back in favour and he set up both goals against Bayer Leverkusen last night.
